Washington DC Plastic Surgeon Is Among National Group Releasing Tenth Annual Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Statistics

Survey Shows Nearly 11.5 Million Cosmetic Procedures in 2006

WASHINGTON, March 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Michael Olding, MD, of Washington, DC, a member of the American Society for Aesthetic PlasticSurgery (ASAPS), is among a group of approximately 2,400 board-certified plastic surgeons in the U.S. who released their 10th annual cosmetic plastic surgery statistics this week. ASAPS, founded in 1967, is the world's leading organization for cosmetic surgery education and research with members in the U.S., Canada and 32 other countries.

More than 14,000 questionnaires were mailed nationwide to a random sampling of board-certified doctors in three specialties most likely to perform several or more of the 34 top cosmetic procedures. Results of the survey were used to project national data on the number of cosmetic procedures in 2006, which totaled nearly 11.5 million. This figure is a 1 percent increase from 2005 and a 446 percent increase from 1997.

Plastic surgeons who are Active Members of ASAPS performed an average of 321 surgical procedures last year. Aesthetic Society members also performed an average of 483 nonsurgical procedures. Dr. Olding has been an ASAPS member since 1987. He is certified by the American Board of PlasticSurgery and specializes in cosmetic surgery of the face and the entire body.

"The results of this survey confirm that Americans continue to view cosmetic plastic surgery as an important way to enhance their quality of life," says Dr. Olding.

The top five surgical procedures in 2006 were liposuction (403,684);breast augmentation (383,886); eyelid surgery (209,999); abdominoplasty(172,457); and breast reduction (145,822).

Women had 92 percent of all cosmetic procedures, a total of 10.5 million procedures. Men had 8 percent of all cosmetic procedures, nearly 1 million procedures. People ages 35-50 had 47 percent of all cosmetic procedures. Racial and ethnic minorities including Hispanics, African-Americans and Asians accounted for 22 percent of the total number of procedures nationwide.

A qualified plastic surgeon, especially one who is a member of theAmerican Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, can help determine whichprocedure will achieve the best results for each individual.    Dr. Olding is available for media interviews.
